Split toning is the secret behind the cinematic colour grades you see in films and high-end photography — cool, tinted shadows paired with warm highlights, the famous teal-and-orange look. Image Machine's split toning tool lets you choose any hue for your shadows and any hue for your highlights, then dials in the strength of each independently. Crucially, the tints are applied as luma-neutral colour shifts, so they change the colour of your image without altering its brightness — your tones stay exactly where you put them while the mood transforms. The shadow tint is weighted toward the darker areas and the highlight tint toward the brighter areas, so the two never fight in the midtones, and pure black and pure white are left clean. Everything runs locally in your browser with exact maths, so there is no quality loss and your photo never leaves your device.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is split toning?
Split toning tints the shadows of an image toward one colour and the highlights toward another. It is the basis of cinematic colour grading — for example cool teal shadows with warm orange highlights — and is used to set the mood of a photo without changing the subject's actual colours much.
Does split toning change the brightness of my photo?
No. Each tint is applied as a luma-neutral colour shift, meaning it adds colour in a chosen hue without changing the pixel's brightness. Your exposure and tonal balance stay intact while the colour mood changes.
What do the Shadows and Highlights controls do?
Each section has a Hue slider that picks the tint colour and an Amount slider that sets its strength. The shadow tint is applied mostly to the darker pixels and the highlight tint to the brighter pixels, with the midtones kept cleaner, so the two tints stay distinct.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Split toning is computed entirely in your browser with the Canvas API — your image is never uploaded, there is no sign-up, and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
