Color splash — also called selective colour or the colour-pop effect — is one of the most striking looks in photography: a single colour kept vivid while the rest of the image fades to black and white, like a red rose in a monochrome street scene. Image Machine's color splash tool makes it effortless. Pick the hue you want to keep, set how wide a band of nearby hues stays in colour, soften the edge of that band for a natural blend, and choose how completely the rest is desaturated. Every pixel's hue is measured and compared to your target: those that match keep their original colour untouched, those that don't are mixed toward their own brightness, and neutral greys — which have no colour to begin with — are never altered. It all runs locally in your browser with exact maths, so there is no quality loss, no watermark, and your photo never leaves your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the color splash effect?

Color splash (also called selective colour or colour pop) keeps one chosen colour in an image while turning everything else black and white. It is used to draw the eye to a single subject — a red umbrella, a yellow flower — against a desaturated background.

How do I keep just one colour?

Set the Keep hue slider to the colour you want to preserve, then use Tolerance to widen or narrow the band of similar hues that stay in colour. Softness fades the edge of that band so the transition looks natural, and Amount controls how fully the rest is turned to grey.

Does it change the colours I keep?

No. Pixels whose hue falls inside the kept band are left exactly as they were — byte for byte — and neutral greys are never touched. Only the pixels outside the band are mixed toward their own brightness, so the effect is perfectly selective.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The color splash effect is computed entirely in your browser with the Canvas API — your image is never uploaded, there is no sign-up, and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
