Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I open a WebP file on my computer or in my photo editor?
Older software — including some versions of Windows Photo Viewer, pre-2020 Photoshop, and many legacy apps — doesn't recognize WebP. Converting to JPG gives you a file that opens in virtually every image viewer, editor, and platform without any plugins.
Does converting WebP to JPG reduce quality?
JPG is lossy, so some quality is lost during conversion. At a high quality setting the difference is barely perceptible, but converting from a lossy WebP to a lossy JPG does compound compression slightly. You cannot fully recover detail already encoded in the source WebP.
I downloaded a WebP from the web and can't upload it to a social media site — what do I do?
Convert it to JPG here. Most social networks, email clients, and CMS platforms accept JPG but may reject WebP files. The converted JPG will upload and display without compatibility issues on virtually any platform.
Does converting WebP to JPG remove transparency?
Yes. JPG has no alpha channel, so any transparent areas in the WebP are filled with a solid background color during conversion. If you need to preserve transparency, convert to PNG instead — both formats support a full alpha channel.
Do I need to create an account to convert WebP to JPG?
No account, no sign-up, and no upload. Drop the WebP file into Image Machine, download the resulting JPG, and you're done. Everything runs locally in your browser — your files never touch a server.
