Measured by uploading fixtures to this page in a real browser and reading the PNGs it produced with Pillow and libheif 1.23, which had no part in making them. Default settings throughout. The comparison base is the HEIC's OWN decoded pixels rather than the picture the fixture was built from, because the HEIC's compression is not this converter's doing and counting it would blame the tool for something it never touched. Building these fixtures is what found three defects in the decoder this page used to use, all fixed on 2026-08-24 and all measured before and after: it expanded full-range files a second time (mean channel error 8.77, every photo about 13% more contrasty than it was shot), it dropped the alpha channel, and it turned 10-bit files into garbage (channel means 126,127,127 became 45,130,47). The figures above are the state after that fix; the figures before it are in the commit. What this does NOT cover: a HEIC holding several images, such as a burst, still converts only the first one and does not say so; and the fixtures are plain sRGB (NCLX primaries 1, transfer 13, matrix 6), so nothing here describes a wide-gamut or HDR HEIC, which needs its own measurement and has not had it.
