Bloom — also called glow, diffuse glow, or the Orton effect — is the soft halo of light that spills out of the bright areas of a photo, lending it a dreamy, cinematic, slightly hazy quality. This tool recreates it digitally in three steps. First it extracts the highlights: each pixel's luminance is measured, and anything above the Threshold you set is kept (weighted so it fades in smoothly from the threshold up to pure white), while everything darker contributes nothing. Second, that highlight layer is blurred with a separable box blur run three times — a close approximation of a Gaussian — with the spread set by the Radius control. Third, the blurred glow is screen-blended back over the original at the strength you choose with Amount, so the light is added without the harsh clipping of a plain additive blend. Because the glow keeps each highlight's own colour, a warm sunset glows warm and a cool sky glows cool. The alpha channel is never touched, so transparency is preserved, and the whole effect runs locally on the HTML canvas — your image is never uploaded, the result is fully deterministic, and there is no sign-up and no watermark.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the bloom / glow effect?

Bloom (or glow) is the soft bleed of light out of the bright parts of an image — the gentle halo you see around a bright window, the sun, or a glowing screen. Photographers also call the soft-focus version of it the Orton effect. It is widely used to give photos a dreamy, romantic, or cinematic feel. This tool produces it by isolating the highlights, blurring them, and blending that blurred light back over the original picture.

What do the Amount, Threshold and Radius controls do?

Amount is the overall strength of the glow — at 0 the image is left exactly as it was. Threshold decides how bright a pixel has to be before it glows: lower it and more of the image blooms, raise it and only the brightest highlights glow (set it to 100 and nothing glows at all). Radius controls how far the light spreads from those highlights — a small radius gives a tight, sharp glow, a large radius a wide, soft haze.

Does the glow keep the colour of the highlights?

Yes. The glow is built from the actual colours of the bright pixels, not a flat white, so a warm sunset blooms warm and a cool blue sky blooms cool. The blurred glow is then screen-blended back over the photo, which adds light gracefully without the hard, clipped white-out you would get from a plain additive blend, and the transparency of the image is left untouched.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The entire effect runs in your browser on the HTML canvas — your photo never leaves your device, nothing is sent to a server, and there is no sign-up and no watermark. The effect is fully deterministic, so the same image and settings always produce an identical result, and the output can be downloaded as a PNG.
