Those are enormous multiples, and they are honest for what was measured: these fixtures are pure vector, so a few bytes of drawing instruction become two million pixels that PNG then has to spell out losslessly. A scanned PDF already contains pixels, so its increase is far smaller. If size matters more than sharp edges, convert to JPG instead. No setting on this page changes the trade, because PNG does not compress that way. |
Measured by uploading fixtures to this page in a real browser and reading the PNGs it produced with Pillow and MuPDF, neither of which had any part in making them. Default settings unless a row says otherwise. MuPDF is the comparison base rather than the program that built the fixtures, because it renders the same PDF independently and so isolates this converter's behaviour from the fixture's. One difference is deliberately not counted as an error: on the embedded raster the two engines place the image one output row apart, which shifts each horizontal edge by a single pixel and is a rounding choice rather than a loss. Building these fixtures is what found that this page had been promising optional transparency it did not implement; that was fixed on 2026-08-24 and the figures above are the state after the fix. What this does NOT cover: encrypted or password-protected PDFs, PDFs whose fonts are not embedded, and colour-managed PDFs carrying an ICC profile, since every fixture here is plain sRGB. Those need their own measurement and have not had it.
