Measured on 10 photographs at 4000 × 3000, the size a phone camera produces, each already a JPEG. The first row is the part worth reading twice: JPEG spends most of its bytes describing detail, and a 12 megapixel frame carries too much of it, so lowering the quality slider is advice that sometimes cannot work at all. Shrinking the picture throws that detail away before the encoder sees it, which is why the second row reaches 1 MB and still looks like a photograph. Your own file will land somewhere in the range, near the small end if it is mostly sky or a plain background, near the large end if it is full of leaves, hair or crowds.
